Anglican Diocese of Sekondi gets new Bishop
The Right Reverend Alexander Kobina Asmah, has been ordained the Bishop Coadjutor of the Anglican Diocese of Sekondi in the Western Region, at the Cathedral Church of St Andrew the Apostle at Sekondi, on Saturday.
The Primate and Metropolitan Archbishop of the Church of Province of West Africa, Anglican Communion and the Bishop of Kumasi, Most Rev. Dr. Daniel Yinka Sarfo, who presided over the event, was supported by about 20 Bishops from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia and Cameroon who attended the Episcopal Ordination and Consecration of Bishop Asmah.
Also present were the Outgoing Bishop of Sekondi, Rt. Rev Col. John K.Otoo (Rtd), the Bishop of Accra, Rt. Rev. Dr. Daniel Torto, Bishop of Cape Coast, Rt. Rev. Dr. Reginald Victor Atta Baffoe, Bishop of Tamale Rt.Rev. Hon. Dr. Jacob Ayebo, Bishop of Mampong Rt. Rev. Dr. Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith and a host of other bishops in the province, clergymen from the Christian community in the Western Region and Ghana and chiefs.
A government delegation led by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Marrietta Brew Appiah- Oppong, including the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Paul Evans Aidoo, the deputy regional minister, Mr. Alfred Ekow Gyan, and deputy minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr. Sampson Ahi, were also present.
After Rt. Rev. Col. Otoo and Rt. Rev Dr. Atta Baffoe presented the new Bishop for his consecration and ordination, Bishop Asmah took the oath of Canonical Obedience before the Provincial Chancellor.
The new Bishop laid prostrate while Archbishop Sarfo consecrated him as he made sign of the cross and a sacred Chrism, and together with the other Bishops, the main celebrant made the sign of the cross on his forehead.
Archbishop Sarfo presented a Bible, a ring and Pectoral Cross to Bishop Asmah, signifying the burden Jesus Christ carried, saying “Take this staff as sign of the Shepherd office, and watch over all the flock to which the Holy Spirit has assigned you Bishop to govern the Church of God.”
Preaching the sermon, Rt. Rev.Dr. Torto, charged Bishop Asmah to transform the Sekondi Diocese of the Anglican Church and follow the steps of Jesus Christ, to be able to lead the flock.
Hon.Mrs. Appiah commended the church for contributing to national development, especially in education, and urged the state and church to sustain their partnership.
She appealed to Ghanaians to promote peace as the country prepares for the upcoming general election.
