The Rev’d Canon Josiah Abadoo (Trinity Sunday)

Trinity Sunday Sermon at the University of Oxford by Fr Josiah Abadoo

On Sunday 15th June 2025, The Rev’d Canon Josiah Myles Abadoo, Priest Missioner in the Diocese of London and Chaplain to the Ghanaian Anglican Community in the UK, preached at Choral Evensong in St Edmund’s Hall, University of Oxford, marking 1700 years since the First Council of Nicaea.

Preaching on the opening words of the Nicene Creedā€”ā€œWe believe in one Godā€ā€”Canon Josiah reminded the congregation that this ancient confession is not just a historical statement, but a living declaration that shapes how we trust, love, worship, and endure in faith.

Drawing on Genesis 18, where God appears to Abraham in the form of three mysterious visitors, and Matthew 22, where Jesus proclaims the greatest commandments, Fr Josiah offered a powerful meditation on divine unity, relationship, and love.

ā€œBelief in one God is not merely an intellectual statement,ā€ he said, ā€œbut a call to trust, love, worship, and perseverance.ā€

He outlined four ways in which Christians live out this belief:

  • Trust – as Sarah was called to believe God’s promise;
  • Love – expressed in wholehearted devotion to God and love for neighbour;
  • Worship – seen in Abraham’s reverence and echoed in our daily lives;
  • Long-suffering – faith sustains us in trials through the assurance that God is always with us.

Fr Josiah closed with a call to Christian witness:

ā€œLet those who encounter us see Christ in us.ā€
