Who we are: The Anglican Diocese of Sekondi
The Diocese of Sekondi, originally part of the Diocese of Accra, traces its roots back to the early 20th century. At that time, the Diocese of Accra—established in 1909—oversaw a vast and growing Anglican presence in Ghana. The area that now forms the Diocese of Sekondi covered over 9,210 square miles, embracing a richly diverse and poly-ethnic population. This included the Sefwi, Aowin, Wassaw, Nzima, and Ahanta peoples, alongside significant numbers of Akan, Ga, and Ewe, many of whom had migrated to the region in search of work in industry, agriculture, and the developing towns of the Western Region.
Several attempts were made in the 1970s to create new dioceses from the growing Diocese of Accra. These efforts culminated successfully when, on 20th March 1980, the Church of the Province of West Africa (CPWA) formally approved the establishment of four new dioceses: Cape Coast, Koforidua, Sunyani-Tamale, and Sekondi. The Venerables J.A. Ackon, R.G.A. Okine, J.K. Dadzon, and Rev’d Fr. T.S.A. Annobil were nominated as Bishops-Elect for the respective dioceses. On St. Luke’s Day, Sunday 18th October 1981, they were consecrated at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Accra, marking a new chapter in the Church’s mission and growth in Ghana.
From its inception, the Diocese of Sekondi has been shaped by the enduring influence of the Anglo-Catholic missionary movement, which brought a deep reverence for the sacramental life of the Church, a commitment to the beauty of holiness, and a strong pastoral presence among the people. Today, we continue that tradition with renewed vigour—remaining faithful to Catholic teaching within the Anglican heritage, while embracing the vibrant rhythms, languages, music, and cultural expressions of the people we serve.
Our liturgies are characterised by reverent ceremony, incense, vestments, and chant, woven together with African drums, local languages, joyful singing, and community participation. This dynamic fusion reflects who we are: an Anglican people rooted in apostolic tradition, joyfully alive in our Ghanaian identity, and committed to proclaiming Christ through Word, Sacrament, and service.
As we continue to grow in faith and mission, the Diocese of Sekondi remains a living testament to the unity of Catholic order, local culture, and Gospel witness—a Church both ancient and new, gathered in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Whether you’re a local seeking to get involved in a new parish, a long-standing member eager to reconnect with our history, or a visitor from overseas exploring our life and mission—a warm welcome awaits you in the Diocese of Sekondi.
